What Shirodhara is

Shiro means head and dhara means stream. In Shirodhara, warm medicated liquid is poured in a thin, unbroken line across the forehead from a vessel suspended above you, moving slowly from temple to temple. A session lasts 30 to 45 minutes and is usually preceded by a short head, neck and shoulder massage.

At Samatvam the liquid, its temperature, the duration and the number of days are prescribed by an Ayurvedic doctor after a consultation. The centre has a dedicated Shirodhara set-up in a quiet, dimmed space.

Who it is traditionally used for

In Ayurvedic practice Shirodhara is described as calming to the mind and nervous system. Doctors traditionally prescribe it as part of plans for stress and burnout, difficulty falling or staying asleep, tension-type headaches, and certain scalp and hair complaints (usually with buttermilk). It is also used during the rebuilding phase of Panchakarma.

Shirodhara is a supportive therapy. If you have a diagnosed mental-health or neurological condition, continue your existing care and tell the doctor, so the sessions are planned safely alongside it.

What happens during a session

You lie on your back on a wooden treatment table. The therapist covers your eyes, checks the temperature of the liquid with you, and begins the stream at the centre of the forehead, gently moving it side to side. The room stays quiet and dim. Afterwards you rest for a few minutes; you can shower in your room or keep the oil in your hair for a few hours as the doctor advises.

Allow 60 to 75 minutes in total.

How many sessions are typical

Seven consecutive days is the most common course, extended to fourteen for longer-standing complaints. The doctor will tell you where you fall and review you at the end.

Aftercare

  • Keep the rest of the day quiet; avoid screens and loud environments for an hour or two if you can.
  • Do not wash the hair immediately unless told to; a wrap is provided.
  • Avoid cold drinks and cold wind on the head for the rest of the day.
  • Eat a light, warm meal in the evening and aim for an early night.

Questions about shirodhara

If your question is not here, ask us before you book. There is no obligation.

What does Shirodhara feel like?

Warm liquid moving slowly across the forehead while you lie still with your eyes covered. Most people find it deeply calming and many drift into a light sleep.

What liquid is used?

Usually medicated oil (Taila Dhara). The doctor may instead choose buttermilk (Thakradhara) or a herbal decoction (Kashaya Dhara), depending on your complaint and constitution.

How many sessions are usual?

A single session is relaxing. When Shirodhara is prescribed for sleep, stress or tension complaints, 7 to 14 consecutive days is typical, with a review at the end.

Will my hair be oily afterwards?

Yes. The oil is best left in for a few hours. We provide a head wrap, and you can wash your hair the same evening or the next morning. Bring a scarf or cap if you prefer.

Can I have Shirodhara if I have a scalp condition?

Often yes, and the doctor may specifically choose Thakradhara (buttermilk) for scalp complaints. Please mention it at the consultation.

Is it safe with my existing medication?

Shirodhara does not involve taking anything internally, so interactions are unlikely, but tell the doctor everything you take so the plan can be coordinated with your other care.
