How Ayurveda approaches weight

Ayurveda treats weight as a question of digestion and metabolism (agni), the accumulation of kapha and meda (fat tissue), and habits around food, sleep and movement. A plan does not start with a scale. It starts with how you digest, when you eat, how you sleep and what your days look like. Therapies are added to support those changes, not to replace them.

Who it is traditionally used for

People who feel heavy, sluggish or bloated; people whose weight has crept up with desk work, travel or a change of routine; and people who want a structured, supervised approach that fits around a medical condition they already manage. Your doctor will assess what may help in your case and will refer you on if something else needs checking first.

What the plan includes

  • Dietary guidance by constitution. What to eat, in what order and at what times; usually simpler than people expect.
  • Daily routine. Sleep and wake times, movement, and the small habits that Ayurveda considers most important.
  • Herbal preparations. Where suitable, formulations to support digestion.
  • Udwarthanam. A vigorous massage with dry herbal powders in upward strokes, traditionally used to stimulate circulation and reduce heaviness.
  • Herbal steam. A few minutes in a wooden steam cabinet after the powder massage.
  • Panchakarma, where appropriate. For some people the doctor may suggest a course of Panchakarma as a foundation.

What happens during a session

An Udwarthanam session is given in private. Warm herbal powder is applied and worked over the body with firm, upward strokes for 30 to 45 minutes. The sensation is invigorating rather than soothing. You then spend a few minutes in the steam cabinet. Allow 60 to 75 minutes.

How many sessions are typical

Plans run four to twelve weeks. Therapy sessions are commonly given as a block of 7 to 14 consecutive days at the start, then weekly, with doctor reviews every few weeks. The diet and routine parts continue throughout.

Aftercare

  • Drink warm water after sessions and avoid cold drinks for the rest of the day.
  • Eat a light, warm meal at your usual time; do not skip meals to “speed things up”.
  • Keep the movement routine the doctor suggested.
  • Bring your food and sleep notes to each review.

Questions about weight management

If your question is not here, ask us before you book. There is no obligation.

How much weight will I lose?

We do not promise numbers, and you should be wary of anyone who does. The plan is about digestion, habits and steady change. Your doctor will talk honestly about what is realistic for you.

What is Udwarthanam?

A brisk massage using dry herbal powders rather than oil, applied in upward strokes. It is the therapy most often used in Ayurvedic weight plans and is usually followed by herbal steam.

Will I have to follow a strict diet?

You will be asked to change what and when you eat, but the plan is built around your constitution and real life, not a printed diet sheet. Regular meal times usually matter more than cutting foods out.

Can I follow the plan if I have diabetes or a thyroid condition?

Often, alongside your existing medical care. Tell the doctor about your diagnosis and medicines so the plan can be coordinated safely. Never stop prescribed medicine on your own.

Is exercise part of the plan?

Yes, matched to your constitution and fitness. The doctor will suggest a type and timing of movement that suits you rather than a generic target.
