What postnatal Ayurvedic care is

Ayurveda calls the period after birth sutika kala and describes a specific routine for it: daily warm-oil massage, gentle warmth, easily digested nourishing food, rest and support for the abdomen and back. The aim, in the classical description, is to help the body regain strength and settle after the effort of pregnancy and birth.

At Samatvam the programme is planned by an Ayurvedic doctor after a consultation, adapted to the type of birth you had and coordinated with the care you are receiving from your obstetrician or midwife. Sessions are given in private.

Who it is traditionally used for

Mothers in the first weeks and months after birth who want structured support with recovery, tiredness, aches in the back and hips, and the general sense of being depleted. It is also chosen by women who grew up with this tradition and want it done properly and safely in Abu Dhabi. Your doctor will assess what is suitable at your stage.

What happens during a session

You are welcomed into a warm, private space. The therapist applies warm medicated oil over the body in long, gentle strokes, with particular care around the abdomen, lower back and hips; the pressure is lighter than a standard Abhyanga. A short period of mild herbal steam may follow. The doctor may add abdominal binding guidance, a scalp oil or, later in the course, a calming therapy such as Shirodhara.

Allow 60 to 90 minutes. A companion and your baby are welcome to wait in the lounge.

How many sessions are typical

Traditional courses run 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days, often starting in the second week after birth. Some families prefer a shorter block and then weekly sessions. The doctor will suggest a plan that fits your recovery and your household, and will review it as you go.

Aftercare

  • Rest after each session; this is the point of the programme, not an optional extra.
  • Eat the warm, simple food the doctor suggests, at regular times.
  • Keep the abdomen and lower back warm, and avoid cold drinks and draughts.
  • Contact your obstetrician or midwife promptly about bleeding, fever, wound problems or severe pain; these are not for us to manage.

Good to know

Questions about postnatal care

If your question is not here, ask us before you book. There is no obligation.

When can I start after giving birth?

It depends on the birth. After an uncomplicated vaginal delivery many women start within the first two weeks; after a caesarean the doctor will wait until the wound has healed and your obstetrician is happy. Bring your discharge summary to the consultation.

Is it safe while breastfeeding?

The therapies are external and are planned with breastfeeding in mind. Any herbal preparations are chosen with that in view, and the doctor will explain each one. Tell us if you have any concerns.

Can I bring my baby?

Yes. Babies are welcome in the reception lounge with a companion, and we will time sessions around feeds where we can. Please tell us when booking.

How many sessions are usual?

Traditional postnatal care runs for several weeks. Courses of 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days are common, and the doctor will suggest what fits your recovery and your household.

What if I am feeling low after the birth?

Please tell the doctor. Low mood after birth is common and sometimes needs more than supportive care. We will listen, and if we think you should also speak to your obstetrician or GP we will say so plainly.
