What Swedana is
Swedana is the Ayurvedic term for therapies that induce gentle sweating. The commonest form in a clinic is herbal steam: the patient sits inside a wooden cabinet while steam from a decoction of herbs fills it, with the head outside and kept cool. It follows oil therapies almost always, because oiling and steaming are described in the texts as a pair, one preparing the body for the other.
Samatvam uses wooden Ayurvedic steam cabinets.
Who it is traditionally used for
Swedana is traditionally used to loosen stiffness in muscles and joints, ease a sense of heaviness, and complete the effect of oil therapies such as Abhyanga and the localised warm-oil therapies used in pain management. During Panchakarma it is part of the daily preparation phase. Your doctor will assess whether it is suitable for you and how long each session should be.
What happens during a session
Immediately after your oil therapy you step into the cabinet and sit on the bench inside. The lid closes around the neck, a cool damp cloth is placed on your forehead, and the therapist starts the steam. You stay for 10 to 20 minutes, with the therapist checking on you throughout. Afterwards you rest briefly, drink warm water and shower in your own room.
How many sessions are typical
Steam is given with each oil session rather than counted separately. If the doctor prescribes 7 or 14 days of Abhyanga, steam follows each one. Localised steam for a single joint may be prescribed alongside a Vasti therapy.
Aftercare
- Rest for five to ten minutes before showering.
- Drink warm water; avoid cold drinks and air conditioning blowing directly on you for a couple of hours.
- Eat something light and warm within an hour or two.
- Do not follow steam with strenuous exercise on the same day.

Questions about herbal steam (swedana)
If your question is not here, ask us before you book. There is no obligation.
Why is my head kept outside the cabinet?
Ayurveda avoids heating the head and eyes directly. The wooden cabinet has an opening for the head, and a cool damp cloth is placed on the forehead so the body warms while the head stays comfortable.
Can I have steam on its own?
Usually it follows an oil therapy such as Abhyanga, because the two are designed to work together. The doctor may occasionally prescribe steam alone, for example a localised steam over a stiff joint.
How hot is it?
Comfortable and adjustable. The therapist stays with you, checks how you feel, and stops the session early if you wish. A first session is often shorter.
Who should avoid steam therapy?
People who are pregnant, have uncontrolled blood pressure, certain heart conditions, very dry or inflamed skin, or who feel faint in heat. The doctor screens for these before prescribing it.
Should I drink water afterwards?
Yes, warm water. Rest for a few minutes before showering, and avoid cold drinks and cold air for a couple of hours.
